How the car running cost calculator works
Add the recurring cash costs of owning a car, then inspect depreciation separately so you do not count the same vehicle cost twice.
Monthly cash cost = loan payment + insurance + fuel + maintenance + annual registration ÷ 12 + other entered recurring costs. Depreciation describes value loss, not a monthly cash payment.
Read our calculation methodology and limitations.
Example
A $500 payment, $150 insurance, $160 fuel, $75 maintenance reserve and $180 annual registration total $900 per month. A depreciation estimate is separate from that cash budget.
What affects the result
- Annual bills need a monthly reserve even when no payment is due this month.
- Maintenance is uneven; a monthly average is a budget allowance, not a repair quote.
- For economic ownership cost, avoid counting both principal repayment and depreciation as independent losses.
Frequently asked questions
Why include registration every month?
Dividing an annual bill by twelve shows the cash to set aside. It does not mean registration is billed monthly.
Is depreciation money I pay each month?
No. It estimates resale value lost. Keep it distinct from cash spending.
What if my car is paid off?
Set the loan payment to zero. Insurance, fuel, upkeep and value loss can continue.
