How the emergency fund calculator works
Plan an emergency savings target using essential expenses, months of coverage, current savings, monthly contributions, and an optional buffer.
Target = max(0, monthly essentials − reliable replacement income) × coverage months + one-time buffer. Months to goal = remaining gap ÷ monthly saving, rounded up.
Read our calculation methodology and limitations.
Example
$3,000 in monthly essentials and six months of coverage gives an $18,000 target. Starting with $6,000 and saving $500 monthly closes the gap in 24 months.
What affects the result
- Coverage is your choice, not a universal recommendation.
- Only include replacement income that would remain available during the emergency.
- This contribution-only model excludes interest, inflation, withdrawals and taxes.
Frequently asked questions
How much should my emergency fund be?
The amount depends on your circumstances. Adjust the coverage period and buffer for your obligations and uncertainty; the example is not personalized advice.
What if I cannot save each month?
With a remaining gap and zero monthly contributions, the calculator reports that no completion date is available. A zero gap means the modeled target is already covered.
