How the personal loan calculator works
Estimate personal-loan payments, total interest, and the true cost after origination fees.
Monthly payment = P × [r(1 + r)ⁿ] ÷ [(1 + r)ⁿ − 1], where P is principal, r is monthly interest, and n is the payment count.
Read our calculation methodology and limitations.
Compare the cash received with the cash repaid
Origination fees can make two loans with similar rates deliver very different value.
Start with net proceeds
If a fee is withheld, the amount deposited may be less than the stated principal. Make sure the net cash actually covers the intended expense.
Compare total repayment
Review all scheduled payments plus separately paid fees. A low monthly payment can still be expensive when the term is long.
Avoid payment stacking
If the loan consolidates other debt, the plan only works when the paid-off balances stay paid off and the new payment fits the budget.
Example
A $15,000 personal loan at 10.5% APR over four years has 48 scheduled payments; an origination fee changes the net cash received and effective cost.
What affects the result
- A lower APR reduces every interest charge.
- A shorter term usually lowers total interest but raises the required payment.
- An origination fee can reduce the cash you receive even when it is deducted upfront.
