How the fuel cost calculator works
Estimate trip fuel spending from distance, fuel economy and price per gallon. Keep all three inputs in the units shown.
Gallons needed = miles ÷ miles per gallon. Fuel cost = gallons × price per gallon.
Read our calculation methodology and limitations.
Example
A 500-mile trip at 28 mpg needs approximately 17.86 US gallons. At $3.50 per gallon, the estimated fuel bill is $62.50.
What affects the result
- Real fuel economy changes with speed, traffic, load and weather.
- Round-trip planning requires round-trip distance.
- Fuel spending does not include tolls, parking, maintenance or depreciation.
Frequently asked questions
Should I enter one-way or round-trip miles?
Enter the full distance you want priced. Double a one-way distance only if the return trip is equivalent.
Can I enter litres per 100 kilometres as mpg?
No. Convert fuel economy and distance first; those quantities use different units.
Is this the full cost of driving?
No. It estimates fuel only. Use the running-cost calculator for broader ownership costs.
