How the discount calculator works
Calculate a sale price, discount savings, and the final price after an entered sales-tax rate.
Savings = original price × discount ÷ 100. Total = discounted price + tax on the discounted price, rounded to cents.
Example
A $120 item at 25% off saves $30. The discounted price is $90; with 7% tax, the total is $96.30.
What affects the result
- The discount applies to the original price.
- Tax is applied after the discount in this model.
- Shipping and additional discounts are not included.
Frequently asked questions
Can I calculate a price without tax?
Yes. Enter a sales-tax rate of 0%.
Do two discounts simply add together?
Not usually. Sequential discounts multiply: 20% off followed by 10% off leaves 72% of the original price, a 28% combined discount. This tool models one discount.
