How the tip & bill split calculator works

Calculate a tip on the pre-tax bill, add sales tax, and split the final total fairly with cent-accurate shares.

Formula

Total = bill + tip on bill + tax on bill. Divide the total cents among the people, giving any remaining cents to one person at a time.

Example

A $100 bill with a 20% tip and 7% tax totals $127. Split three ways, one person pays $42.34 and two pay $42.33.

What affects the result

  • Tip and tax both use the pre-tax bill.
  • The number of people must be a positive whole number.
  • Check whether gratuity or a service charge is already included.

Frequently asked questions

Is the tip calculated before or after tax?

Before tax. Enter the pre-tax bill and the tax rate separately.

Why can one person pay a cent more?

Some totals cannot split equally into whole cents. Distributing the remainder makes the payments add up exactly.
